Rodriguez Takes On "El Mariachi vs. Natural Born Killers"

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Mexican American director Robert Rodriguez has taken on a new challenge. Collaborating with producer Quentin Tarantino and Miramax Films, he has begun pre-production on “Some Cut Deep,” an all-encompassing sequel to “El Mariachi, “Desperado,” “Once Upon A Time In Mexico,” and Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers.”

The movie, being filmed mostly in Mexico City and its outskirts, as well as Los Angeles and Arizona, takes place roughly ten years after Mickey and Mallory Knox left us wondering what was next, at the end of “Natural Born Killers.” Their murder spree has ebbed, and they now have two children, Charlie and Ramirez, that they devote their lives to. However, one of the police officers that they murdered during their crime spree a decade earlier happens to be a cousin of El Mariachi and he, as always, will stop at nothing for the sake of revenge.

Rodriguez On The Set Of
El Mariachi vs. Natural Born Killers

The “El Mariachi vs. Natural Born Killers” idea has been on the back burner for almost ten years, and fans the world over have been worried about its progress. But, in November 2005 they will see that their efforts, and the efforts of many, will come to fruition.

“I was a big fan of ‘El Mariachi’ and it’s sequels,” says Latin crooner and new J.Lo ornament Marc Anthony, who will replace Antonio Banderas as the vengeful guitarist. “[Robert] Rodriguez is the Mexican Scorsese.”

Banderas is not the only alumni who couldn’t make it to the party. Woody “Mickey Knox” Harrelson himself bowed out due to scheduling conflicts with his new indie film “Bong In Utah” which he wrote, produced, co-directed, and is starring in. There is rumor that perhaps rap star Eminem will fill his shoes as the devilish mass murderer.

If you thought that was surprising, the cameo filled madness of a movie also boasts Branford Marsalis as a getaway driver, Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as “Pulp Fiction’s Jules Winfield, Bruce Willis as a United States Customs Official, and Ryan Seacrest as the bounty hunter who is always one step behind Marc Anthony’s “Mariachi.”

The two most prominent leading ladies on the roster are Mallory Knox (possibly Fairuza Balk, though there is talk of enlisting singer Pink), and El Mariachi’s new flame, a hairstylist-turned-gunslinger (Charisma Carpenter).

So all you fans that have been calling out for a showdown between El Mariachi and The Knoxes, never you fear! It’s right around the corner.

We won’t know the details until principal photography starts in a couple of months, but read the trades, stay alert, and we will keep you posted on developments as they arrive!
